Green Door Book Store & Gift Shoppe is now Monarch Books & Gifts!

December 2022 - Overland Park, KS Indie Bookstore Rebrands, Continues to Be a Valuable Local Fixture

With a new name and fresh branding, owner Christin Young cements Monarch Books & Gifts, formerly The Green Door Book Store & Gift Shoppe, as a local indie fixture with a commitment to the Kansas City and surrounding communities.

Monarch Books & Gifts is what indie bookstore dreams are made of.

With cozy seating, a children's area and the smell of coffee in the air, Monarch Books & Gifts is home to a zen atmosphere, shelves and shelves of curated books, and a selection of unique and funny gifts, many sourced from local makers! The landscape of Kansas City's independent bookstore scene is in flux and Monarch Books & Gifts' owner, Christin Young, is hard at work, continuing to provide above and beyond customer service, access to any title her customers can imagine, and unique gifts for any occasion.

In the face of zoning issues at a previous location in the first year, and then the shutdown due to covid immediately after the move to the current location, many businesses might have thrown in the towel. But Young, armed with eternal optimism and an entrepreneurial spirit, remained undeterred. “I see it as getting the hard lessons out of the way. I don’t see obstacles, but opportunities and for me there is no plan b - I am all in and dedicated to giving the community a much needed indie bookstore! I am passionate about books and I love making people laugh!”

"We want the community to know that we're here and we're thriving," Young said. “We're the same quaint independent bookstore and gift shop with the same ownership, the same commitment to our community, and the same vision and philosophy. We believe in creativity and uniqueness, and that laughter is the best medicine!”

Young's business model has always been to combine an indie bookstore with fun and unique gifts for all occasions and special moments. Customers can always find a little something for everyone, making Monarch Books & Gifts a go-to for special gifts for that special someone or to treat yourself. “All of this has helped us create a very loyal customer base,” Young says. "It really fills me up to know we have 'regulars,' because, with Monarch, I've tried to bring to life the indie bookstore vibe that I love. To know that it touches other readers the same way - it's pretty special. Magical, even."

“We believe local, independent bookstores are the foundation of the literary ecosystem essential to our communities."

Young has also focused on integrating with the local literary community and catering to book fans of all ages. Nestled in the Stanley Station shopping center at 151st and 69 Highway in southeast Johnson County, Monarch Books hosts a monthly book club gathering, as well as frequent author events in the store and in the community. Earlier this fall, the store hosted New York Times bestselling authors W. Bruce Cameron (A Dog's Purpose), Joe Posnanski (The Baseball 100) in collaboration with one of our local libraries, and local best-selling author Becky Blades launched her newest book (Start More Than You Can Finish) in-store for a fun evening with local readers.

Partnering with local libraries and schools has been a key element in Young's quest to bring authors to Kansas City. "We've had so much fun getting out there in the community, seeing our customers interact with their favorite authors and fostering a deeper connection within our local book community," says Young. Readers are special people. We love being the place they can come, where they can not only find a special gift for that special someone, but where they can find their people and meet their literary heroes."
